Member of the Supervisory Board – focus area museums 

Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is an entrepreneurial art and cultural history museum that is strongly rooted in the city and the region, with a high-quality collection and exhibitions of (inter)national significance. The museum receives approximately 60,000 visitors annually. With three program lines – Old Masters from the 16th and 17th centuries, early 20th-century art around the Bergense school, and contemporary and cultural history themes – we offer a versatile range of exhibitions, educational programs, and activities. In the coming years, we aim to introduce a wide and diverse audience to, inspire them with, and connect them with the art, culture, and history of Alkmaar and the region. The museum is currently working on expansion plans that will strengthen its reputation as the museum of the north of the Netherlands where world-class art can be seen. 

The museum is structurally subsidized by the municipality of Alkmaar. In 2014, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar became independent as a foundation, which operates according to the Supervisory Board model. The administrative responsibility lies with the director. Supervision is carried out by the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board also has an advisory role, particularly in the field of strategy and policy. 

The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar adheres to the principles of the Governance Code Culture and also follows the Fair Practice Code and the Code of Diversity and Inclusion.  

The museum organization has 36 employees on payroll and nearly 50 volunteers. 

Due to the expiration of the two terms of office, the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is looking for a member of the Supervisory Board – museum focus area 

Profile 

  • is well informed about the current developments in the national and international art and museum world and has a relevant network; 
  • helicopter view of the field with insight into the role of urban and regional museums;  
  • affinity with the art and cultural history that the museum collects and presents; 
  • sense of administrative relations;  
  • independent, reflective and critical; 
  • team player within the Supervisory Board;  
  • Extremely knowledgeable about governance, also in the cultural sector.  

The Supervisory Board 

The Supervisory Board consists of five members and meets four to five times a year. In addition, there is an annual strategy session and a self-evaluation. Of course, the members attend openings of exhibitions and important events. The members receive a severance pay. Members of the Supervisory Board are appointed for a period of four years, with a possible extension of another four years.
