The Kremer Collection returns to Alkmaar

An exhibition about faith, trust, and conviction

Alkmaar, 08-31-2026 – Starting September 11, 2026, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar presents The Kremer Collection x Alkmaar – Faith. In this intimate exhibition, seventeenth-century works prompt reflection on faith, trust, and personal beliefs. Following the success of The Kremer Collection – a shared love the museum is once again bringing a selection of works from the Kremer Collection to Alkmaar.

Pending the expansion that will make it possible to exhibit The Kremer Collection at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar on a long-term basis, the museum is presenting thematic exhibitions centered around works from the collection. Each edition starts from a different theme and brings together works from The Kremer Collection with the museum's own collection.

The own collection as a starting point

For Faith the special Luther cabinet from the collection of Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar forms the starting point. The showpiece cabinet is decorated with painted scenes centered around the theme of faith. Surrounding it, works from The Kremer Collection have been brought together, each telling a story about religion and belief from a different perspective. Sometimes a work reflects the faith of the artist, sometimes that of the person for whom it was made, or of the collector who once owned it.

Together, the artworks open a window onto the seventeenth century. What provided people with a sense of security? Which beliefs shaped their daily lives? What did they consider important? And what did they believe in?

The exhibition makes you reflect on belief. Because belief does not only have to be about religion. It can also be about trust, ideals, and the convictions that give direction to life. What do you believe in yourself? In a religion, in the future, in yourself, or in the people around you?

The Kremer Collection x Alkmaar

The Kremer family and Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar have stated their intention to house the Kremer Collection in the museum on a long-term basis. The internationally renowned private collection includes masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Pieter de Hooch, among others.

The expansion plans of Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar will make it possible to give the collection a permanent place in the museum in the future. Until then, the exhibitions featuring works from the Kremer Collection will continually offer visitors a new perspective on the richness and versatility of the Kremer Collection.
