Rembrandt in Alkmaar
The standard-bearer on tour
July 2 to 31, 2022
Rembrandt's recently acquired work "The Chipbearer" by Rembrandt - before it receives a permanent place in the Rijksmuseum's Gallery of Honor in Amsterdam - will tour the twelve provinces. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar has been selected as the exclusive venue for the province of North Holland. The important work will be on display here during the month of July. Alkmaar thus brings a world-class masterpiece to the city.
Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is extremely proud to be part of the national tour. The painting by Rembrandt fits in particularly well with the museum's own collection, which includes no fewer than sixteen militia paintings, which also depict standard-bearers. Rembrandt painted "The Flagbearer" in 1636. The imposing work of art shows the master at his best.
To give as many Alkmaar residents as possible the chance to admire "The Rembrandt" up close, the museum will open its doors every day of the week during the month of July. The museum wants a wide audience to see the Rembrandt with their own eyes and will therefore have free admission every Monday during the month of July.
'The Vaandeldrager' (1636) by Rembrandt was purchased by the Dutch state in late January 2022 with the support of private parties, the Rembrandt Association and the Rijksmuseum Fund. After Friesland and Utrecht, North Holland is the third province in the series of 12 where the work will be a guest.
