Discover the Zijpepolder: from water to land

Join us on a discovery tour of the Zijpepolder! On November 13th, the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, in collaboration with the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier and the Zijper Museum, is organizing a special excursion to this historic polder landscape.
We depart by coach from the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar to the Zijper Museum. Here, historian Lars Boon takes you on a journey through the history of the Zijpepolder, accompanied by a cup of coffee or tea. How did this area from water change into land? And what traces of that history are still visible today?
After this introduction, we get back on the bus. Together with a field manager from Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier, we explore the polder and visit various special places. Discover how a mill works, learn more about the surprising life beneath the surface and experience how the historical map of Jan van Scorel comes to life in the landscape of today.
This excursion is in line with the exhibition From water to land at the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. We recommend visiting the exhibition beforehand, but this is not necessary to participate in the excursion.
Program
- 9:45 a.m. – Collection at the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar
- 10:00 – Departure by coach to the Zijper Museum
- 10:30 a.m. – Welcome with coffee and tea at the Zijper Museum and a historical introduction by Lars Boon
- 11.15 – 14.00 hours – Excursion through the Zijpepolder with the guidance of an area manager
- 14:30 – Return to the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar

Good to know:
- The tour bus leaves at exactly 10:00 AM. Make sure you arrive on time.
- There is no lunch provided during the excursion. Therefore, please bring your own lunch pack with you, which you can eat on the bus along the way.
- Would you prefer to come to the Zijper Museum on your own? That is possible! Make sure you arrive at 10:30 AM and let us know in advance via RSVP@museumalkmaar.nl.
- Do you want to visit Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar after the event? For this, you need a separate entrance ticket.
