Help bring this special work by Charley Toorop to Alkmaar

The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar has the opportunity to Still life with green vase Purchased from Charley Toorop in 1915. An early and exceptional work that fits exceptionally well within our collection. Before the painting is shown at PAN Amsterdam, we would like to give our benefactors the first opportunity to make this purchase possible.

Still life with green vase It emerged in the first half of 1915, when Charley Toorop (1891-1955) lived in Bergen and her own visual language took on ever clearer form. Her development from Luminism and Cubism to a personal, figurative expressionism is already evident in the powerful colors, pronounced contours, and almost abstract forms.

This painting is particularly important for our collection.

An early painting from Charlie’s early years in Bergen is still missing. We also don’t have a real still life of her. With this purchase, we are filling that gap and can tell the story of her development as an artist and her connection to Bergen even better.

The provenance is also special. The influential art educator and collector H.P. Bremmer, one of the first buyers and advocates of Charley Toorop, purchased the work in 1916. Since then, it has remained in the Bremmer family for no fewer than three generations. Now we have the opportunity to give the painting a new destination: a permanent place in Alkmaar, accessible to everyone.

Together we will bring Charley to Alkmaar

To make the purchase possible, we want to raise €15,000 together with our benefactors. The remaining part of the purchase price will be financed from our purchasing fund. Every contribution brings the painting closer to our collection.
