Gestel and De Smet – Colorful Friendship on Opium (AVROTROS)

On April 30, presenter Beitske de Jong spoke with Kees van der Geer, guest curator of the exhibition Gestel and De Smet – colorful friendship at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.

This special exhibition brings together the work of two influential artists: Gustave De Smet, a grand master of Flemish Expressionism, and Leo Gestel, a pioneer of Dutch modern art. Their encounter in the Netherlands during World War I led to a close friendship and an inspiring artistic exchange.

The story being told goes beyond art alone: it's a glimpse into how two artists influence, support, and challenge each other in both bright and dark times.

A must-read for anyone interested in art, history, and the power of human connection.
