The entire collection, comprising approximately 100 paintings, was lovingly assembled by the Kremer family and is considered one of the most important private collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting in the world. With this exceptional loan, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar will become one of the leading museums in the Netherlands for 17th-century art. To accommodate this collection, the desire to expand the museum becomes even more pressing. Until June 1, 2025, the public can get an extensive preview of the collection, with nearly 50 works on display in the temporary exhibition. The Kremer Collection: a love shared.

Marrigje Rikken, Director of the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar: “The De Kremer Collection is one of the most important private collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings today. It's fantastic that we can present this internationally renowned collection, which includes an early Rembrandt, possibly for a long period in Alkmaar. It allows us to place our own collection in the context of what was happening nationally and is therefore an important addition to our own collection. This instantly places the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar among the top 17th-century art collections in Dutch museums.”

George Kremer: “We have been following Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar for some time. We are impressed by its ambition and the plans to expand in order to serve an even wider audience. Partly for this reason, Ilone, Joël, and I, after much deliberation amongst ourselves and with the fantastic people who work at this museum, have decided to take this path towards a long-term presentation of our collection at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. It has always been our mission to share the collection with as many people as possible and to share the love and joy that we feel for each individual work that we have purchased together. We see that this mission aligns perfectly with the museum's plans and hope to contribute in this way to the impact that this wonderful museum aims to achieve in the region, in the Netherlands, and beyond.”

Additional presentation space
To house this important collection in the museum, extra space is needed. This rare opportunity makes the museum's expansion ambitions even more relevant. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar has long harbored the desire to create additional space for public activities, co-creation, education, and more exhibition space for contemporary art, among other things, in order to better serve the residents and visitors of Alkmaar and the region.

The Kremer Collection
The Kremer Collection has been diligently assembled by George and Ilone Kremer since 1994 and includes some 100 works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch, Judith Leyster, Caesar van Everdingen and Michael Sweerts, among others. Numerous genres are represented throughout the collection, including genre scenes, landscapes, history painting, Italianate art, seascapes and portraits. One of the absolute highlights is a painting by Rembrandt: Tronie of an old man with a turban from around 1627/28. Furthermore, the extensive sub-collection of Northern Caravaggisti is a distinctive part of the Kremer Collection. The collection stands out not only for the quality of the works but also for the way in which the collectors and their son Joël Kremer share their passion with a broad audience. In addition, the collection holds a unique global position and leads the way in the development and use of emerging technologies for recording and experiencing cultural heritage, such as the digital museum. The Kremer Collection.

Exhibition A love shared
The temporary exhibition A Love Shared is an excellent opportunity for the public to become acquainted with this exceptional collection.
