Head of Program and Collection

Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is an enterprising art and cultural history museum strongly anchored in the city and the region, with a high-quality collection and exhibitions of (inter)national significance. The museum receives approximately 60,000 visitors annually. With three program lines - old masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, early 20th-century art around the Bergen School and contemporary and cultural-historical themes - we offer a diverse range of exhibitions, educational programs and activities. In the coming years we want to introduce, inspire and connect a broad and diverse audience with art, culture and history of Alkmaar and the region. The museum is currently working hard on
expansion plans that will allow it to solidify its name as the premier museum in the north of the Netherlands where world-class art can be seen.
The Program and Collection Department is responsible for the museum's substantive impact and consists of eight employees and one volunteer, divided between collection (management), education and participation, curators and project management presentations.
For the Program and Collections Department, the museum seeks a Head of Program and Collections for 28-32 hours per week
What will you do?
- You will work with the department to create policy for several years and ensure that policy is shaped and given substance at the strategic and tactical levels.
- You will be substantively responsible for a dynamic and cohesive exhibition and activity program together with the Director and Head of Audience, as well as the implementation of a comprehensive public, education and participation program.
- You will work with the department to develop a sustainable collection plan and ensure proper implementation of the preservation, management and accessibility of the entire collection and an active collection policy.
- You will translate mission, vision and policies into accessible public program and play an active role in creating opportunities.
- You will be part of the management team and connect the disciplines within your department to the museum's museum mission.
- You manage team members in a result-oriented way and help them develop in their roles.
- You will be responsible for the efficient organization of the department and ensure the recording and monitoring of work processes in the various task areas.
- Together with the director, you will represent Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar within the region, in the national and international museum world, with donors, collection-holding institutions and governments.
What do you bring?
- You are an open and people-oriented manager, creating overview for the team, reviewing content and sparring on the impact of plans and projects.
- You are an integral manager who easily switches between strategy and operations.
- You have extensive experience in the museum field in at least one of the department's subfields and preferably have experience in developing public programs, exhibition processes and project-based work.
- You are familiar with the workings of an MT, understand the dynamics and complexity of the cultural world and have an eye for relevant developments within and outside the museum.
- You are able to prioritize and manage for consistency.
- You are decisive, creative and enjoy taking the initiative.
What do we offer you?
We offer a dynamic and challenging work environment, with room to develop yourself. The salary is gross min. €4,532 and max. €7,093 per month based on 36 hours (reference date July 1, 2025, grading based on experience, expertise and level of education). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance and 3.4% year-end bonus. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar applies the Museum collective bargaining agreement and is affiliated with the ABP pension fund. The appointment is initially for one year, with a view to permanent employment.
