His annual invasion of the farm of a friendly farmer in Aartswoud in North Holland, inspired photographer Hans van der Meer (1955) to embark on a personal quest for the changing world of the cow. Over the past few years he has visited countless farmers to hear their views of the future, but above all to record the everyday life of the Dutch cow.
Complex and contradictory
With his investigative eye, Van der Meer shows in great detail just how complex and contradictory our dealings with the cow have become. We have a traditional sense of connection to the cow. In the countryside we like to see grazing cows in a peaceful meadow landscape. At the same time we have turned the cow into a technologically-controlled milk producer. The wholesale supplier to one of the Netherlands’ most important business sectors: the dairy industry.
The photographer’s involved, personal approach gets us thinking. With each image you wonder what you are looking at, what story the photograph tells.
